Part of our company philosophy is to put part of our profits (when we manage to make any!) toward causes we believe in. We do this in several ways, the main one being our
‘Change of Heart’ Campaign
This is a simple scheme by which we encourage our customers to put their change into the collection box by the till. Our company match-funds what our lovely customers donate.
The boxes have 5 compartments and we support a range of local, national and international charities whose work we like. Our customers choose which charity they want to support. We change the charities from time to time. We will update this space periodically to give you the current score.
We have a particular liking for work that has very high human benefit for the cost input; Wateraid is a favourite. A clean water scheme in a poor country can give tremendous life-enhancing benefits to the people, for modest investment.
DONATIONS MADE TO DATE TO THE CHARITIES WE SUPPORT, FROM INDIVIDUAL PUBS
Our customers have donated 50% of these amounts; The Head Of Steam Ltd has matched that giving with the same amount, to give these totals.

Bigger schemes
When possible, we fund bigger schemes. A few years ago, we funded, for Wateraid, the creation of a water well, training and maintenance for a small town in Nepal. We have done other such schemes in the past.
Stop press! Major £13,000 scheme of WATERAID to provide water well, equipment and training in the town of Koro, Mali (Africa) - entirely funded by profits from The Head Of Steam Ltd during Summer, 2005.
This is what our lovely customers will effectively be providing -
* 18,000 people with access to safe water by March 2006
* 9,000 people with education to improve hygiene behaviour
* training for 45 water
committees in 3 communes
* training for all pupils in
35 schools to adopt safe hygiene standards and to communicate these to their families

OUR LATEST PROJECT -
BIKE RIDE ACROSS THE USA coast to coast, via ROUTE 66
raising funds for a WATERAID project at Yelekebougou in Mali, Africa
In September through October 2005, Tony Brookes (Managing Director of The Head Of Steam Ltd), his daughter Josie and mate Seamus Butler rode Harley Davidsons from east to west coast of the USA, taking in most of Route 66, from Chicago to Santa Monica, Calidornia. It was a magical trip with adventures all the way!
Sponsorship was sought from friends, family and the licensed trade - breweries and pub groups.
The most generous amount (£500) came from Alistair Hains of Brett Oils in Newcastle - to whom our special thanks.
We aim to raise as much of the £5000 target as possible - the result will be posted here.
Send donations (cheques to WATERAID) to the office address in Hexham please
About the project
This project is scheduled to last for one year. It began in April this year and will be finished by the end of March 2006.
The Yelekebougou Commune is situated in the Kati Circle and the Koulikoro Region about 55 km north of Bamako. The 39,000 inhabitants of Yelekebougou live in villages which are spilt into three sectors: Yelekebougou, Koulounikoro and Meni.
The social infrastructure of the Yelekebougou Commune is very limited. Currently there are only two schools and one public health clinic.
Yelekebougou is in a Sahel climate. Just south of the Sahara the area is best characterised by the heat which regularly reaches 42° C (108 F). There are two distinct seasons: the dry and the wet seasons. This Commune faces extreme water stress during both seasons. During the dry seasons the groundwater level is very low which means that there is a lack of water for half the year. The river dries up at that period of the year. The mean rainfall is 600 mm per year which falls in a concentrated period of time. This causes the river to flood and the rain water drives human as well as animal excreta from the river into the Communes’ wells.
Aims of the project
In partnership with PAISA (Support Programme for Food Security) in West Africa and AMEPPE who will implement the project, WaterAid Mali will work will seek to improve traditional wells, rehabilitate water pumps, build sanitation facilities and educate local people on best hygiene practice in the eight villages of Yelekebougou.
